For a playful and fun children’s birthday party, why not take a leaf out of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and create your very own version of the Mad Hatter’s tea party? It is the perfect opportunity for the kids to get dressed up with so many options, such as the simple playing card, the March Hare, the White Rabbit or Alice herself.
Set the scene
You can let your imagination run riot here; think all things ‘down the rabbit hole’. Cut out some giant arrows with ‘this way’, ‘that way’ and ‘down here’ and hang them from the ceilings; you could even use these as part of a treasure hunt. Pop down the charity shop and see if they have any old decks of cards and string these together for decorations; or you could use them to attach to your party bags and personalise them with each child’s name. Bamboozle the kids by collecting all the clocks from around the house and setting the hands at different positions, with alarms set to go off at differing times to denote the start of a new game, or that tea is now served.
Time for tea
Make teatime really fun by creating a stunning tea table. You can make lots of mini labels saying ‘eat me’ and ‘drink me’ and attach them to food and drinks on the table (it’s also a good way to get the children to eat the healthier food!). You can even ice your cup cakes and biscuits with lots of quirky messages; and don’t forget those oh so important tarts that the Knave of Hearts was accused of stealing! Set the table with lots of bright and colourful plates and cutlery and maybe find some eye-catching teapots which you can fill with squash. You could decorate the table with chess pieces, daisies and roses and maybe a few more of those playing cards.
