When it comes to christening your little one, there's no better opportunity to bring the whole family together. With a little planning, the after party could become a very special memory.
Here's our checklist of what to do:
1 - Choose the godparents - Do this well in advance as they are key people during the ceremony. They are also often able to help with organisation.
2 - Select the christening date and location - This can be tricky. Most families are spread out across the country these days, and many have a busy schedule. Give people as much notice as you can, and try to avoid existing family dates such as birthdays and anniversaries. Think about the time of day of the ceremony, trying to ensure the best time for the majority of guests.
3 - Draw up the guest list - You will need to bear in mind your christening party location and budget. This step is key when it comes to ordering invitations, and catering.
4 - Choosing the party venue - What kind of party do you want? Would you like a formal, catered reception, or an informal gathering with a buffet? If you have a large number of children attending, is the party venue suitable and does it have entertainment for them? Some parents organise colouring books, videos, books, games, and toys for their young guests. Will you need bubbles, helium balloons, or an entertainer?
5 - Choose and send out your invitations - When choosing your christening invitations, look at your budget, choose a design which suits your event, and make sure the date, time, and venue are all clear. Also make it clear what the dress code will be: suit and tie, smart casual, etc. When it comes to sending them out, make sure this is done at least four weeks before the big day, and that people are clear about the fact you want them to RSVP, and how you want them to do it (by phone, mail, or email).
6 - Choose your outfits - Most christenings involve pictures, so choose an outfit accordingly, and choose a suitable outfit for your little one.
7 - Book a photographer - Do this well in advance, allowing the photographer to check out the venue for lighting, any rules regarding pictures being taken in the church or chapel.
8 - Ensure your guests are clear about gifts. If you don't want them to bring any, say so on the invitations, or they will assume you do wish them to bring presents.
Enjoy your day!
