How to plan a winter-themed birthday for children

Sometimes it’s difficult to plan a birthday party when you’re not sure what the weather’s going to be like, but instead of shunning the cold and wintry weather, embrace it and make the best of the season.

There are so many cool birthday ideas to turn a drab and dreary day into the special occasion you want for your little one, from the colours and symbols of winter to the inspirational and popular children’s film Frozen.

Things to consider

The venue

There are many child-centred places that will accommodate a party for your child and base it around any theme if you wish. One place you may like to consider, that not many people think about, is an ice rink. It makes an absolutely perfect and unusual location for the party and you can get the children to dress up as Frozen or seasonal characters. There is often the option to have a short instructional lesson for the children and then time to skate along to any music you specify. The rink may also have a room that you can use for the party afterwards.

The decorations

Common colours for winter-themed parties include turquoise, blue, white and silver. You could add a touch of glitter and glitz with tinsel and twinkling fairy lights, as well as other seasonal items like pine cones, frosted sticks and snowflakes.

You can cover tables with white or silver cloths and then add snowflake confetti and theme your plates, cups and napkins with a frosted theme.

No birthday party is complete without balloons, so have them in the theme colours and if you like you can get some white balloons and only blow them up about a quarter of their size to make smaller “snow-balloons”. You can also tether clumps of white balloons together and secure them with weights on the floor to make snow piles.

The food

One of the most memorable parts of the party should be the food; children love food based on a theme. Alongside the usual party food, you can add some specially themed choices including snowball cake pops, marshmallow pops, snowy rice crispy cakes, snowflake cupcakes, a hot chocolate buffet and a themed birthday cake.

The entertainment

Traditional party games, like pass the parcel, can be adapted to the winter theme. There are also some other things you can do to entertain the kids at a winter-themed birthday party, including 'build a snowman' competitions with sweets, making snow globes or cutting paper snowflakes.

To settle the kids towards the end of the party and to give you a chance to get started on the cleanup, there’s nothing better than a movie and popcorn. Set up a comfy space with blankets, beanbags or cushions and let the kids watch Frozen with themed popcorn buckets.

Of course, no party would ever take place unless the people you want to come, actually know about it. That’s where party invitations are essential.
