Whether you're organising it as a surprise for a loved one, or you're the parent-to-be who's in charge of party planning, a baby shower is a wonderful way of gathering family and friends together to celebrate a new arrival. Yet if you've never been to one before, you may be scratching your head wondering where to start. Here are a few things you can do to make sure your baby shower goes without a hitch.
1. Remember to send out invitations well in advance
Don't send out the invitations at the last minute, otherwise you might find that some of the people who matter most to the new mum won't be able to make it. Before deciding on a definite date, discuss when grandparents, other close family members and best friends are available to ensure there won't be anyone missing, and send the invites weeks in advance. Add a personal touch to your party with Putty Print's wide range of customisable baby shower invitations.
2. Compile a gift list
Traditionally, all guests attending a baby shower bring a gift for the expectant mother or her new baby. From clothes to nappies to toys, there will be several things that she needs before he or she arrives, and other items she may have already bought. Avoid everyone bringing gifts that aren't really needed (or wanted!) by compiling a list before the party, and asking guests to choose one item each. Gift lists also give those who don't have a clue some much-needed inspiration.
3. Make sure decorations are baby themed
You don't want the baby shower to look like any old party, so try to go for banners, balloons and bunting that reflect the baby theme as much as possible. If the parents have revealed the baby's sex you could use that to influence your choices, from banners saying “It's a boy/girl!” to themed balloons, tableware and centrepieces.
4. Choose fun finger food
Sticking to finger food will save you cooking a hearty meal for a large number of people. From small sandwiches and sausage rolls to baby-themed cupcakes, there are plenty of options out there; just make sure that everything on offer is safe to eat in pregnancy. And don't forget the gender reveal cake, complete with pink or blue sponge!
